What is a lapbook?

At first glance, a lapbook looks like it's just a cardboard folder with different shaped paper booklets glued inside it. But don't be deceived, a lapbook is so much more.

It's an effective means of displaying and recording a child's learning.

It's a way of helping children learn by breaking big projects up into smaller, more manageable chunks.

It's more versatile than a workbook or worksheet, being more hands-on and more creative. Children can decide where to put the minibooks to make their own unique layout.

It's a means of providing a personalised education; lapbooks can be adapted for each individual child by selecting the minibooks that best suit them and minibooks can be completed in a way that builds on each child's strengths.

Lapbooks have played a big part in my children's learning journey for the past eleven years. My son treasures his lapbooks. Not only have they helped him to retain information, make connections and enjoy learning, they also have provided him with happy memories through out his childhood. What can be better than that?

Have you made lapbooks with your kids? I'd love to hear about your favourite lapbook topics. Please leave comments below.

Oh, and all the lapbooks pictured can be found at the Branch Out World website :)
